Tuesday Session 1 - Dynamic Forms and Surface Design on the Wheel

$375.00

In this 6-week course we'll be pushing the boundaries of surface designs and experimenting with dynamic forms through throwing and altering. The class direction? It's all about you and your interests! Our main exploration will be in altered forms, materials and surface design. This class will be mostly wheel focused but will implement some hand building techniques to create our altered forms. A little experience with both the wheel & hand building is recommended but not required. Here's a sneak peek of what we will cover:

Materials:

  • Underglaze: Sgraffito, mixing, swirl, inlay, choosing between underglaze and colored slip.

  • Colored Slip: DIY colored slip, slip design with ribs and other tools.

  • Wax Resist: Carving, layering colors, waxing during glazing, the right mixture, and types of wax.

Surface Design:

  • Carving: Experimenting with carving tools, creating textured pots, and choosing the right clay consistency.

  • Wheel Textures: Exploring possible wheel textures and starting your design on the wheel.

  • Piercing: Trying out hole punches and xacto knives, preserving positive space, and finding the balance between clay stiffness and workability.

  • Altering: Transforming round pots on the wheel, darting, and combining pots for new forms.

The first class will meet on Tuesday January 6th 6:30-9pm and the last class will meet on Tuesday February 10th.

This class includes:

  • 25 LBS of clay and the ability to purchase more

  • Firing of your pottery in our electric kilns

  • Glazes and decorating materials

  • Use of studio tools and equipment

  • A storage space to keep your work, personal tools and clay on

  • Access to Open Studio Hours Saturday and Sunday 12pm-4pm

  • Students will also be given our “artist phone number” to call in and see if they are able to get extra studio time outside of open studio hours.

  • 6 In-person class sessions that will meet weekly on the day and time of your class. Our classes are kept small to allow students to have more one on one time and step by step instruction from our teachers.

Project possibilities: Vases, mugs, plates, large bowls and more.

Please note that the minimum age to register for this class is 16 years old.
