March Artist Window: Alex Beck Ceramics

We’re excited to continue our monthly artist windows, a new way to spotlight the incredible talent within our studio community. Each month, one of our Brick & Mortar artists takes over the entire front window shelf space, transforming it into a small exhibition of their work.

It’s a chance to slow down, look closely, and celebrate the creativity, craftsmanship, and individual voices of our members…. right from the sidewalk.

This month, we’re excited to feature Alex Beck of Alex Beck Ceramics.

San Francisco ceramicist Alex Beck is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and a deep appreciation for the tactile possibilities of clay. His work centers on surface design: carved textures, bold patterns, and vibrant colors that transform functional pots into pieces that feel entirely one of a kind.

Alex rarely finishes a mug, planter, bowl, vase, or teapot without adding some kind of surface element. Whether it’s carved lines or playful color combinations, these details invite you to look closer and experience each piece not just visually, but through touch.

Alex works out of two studios in San Francisco, Ruby’s Clay Studio in the Castro and Brick & Mortar Studios. Each space shapes a different part of his process. At Ruby’s, he enjoys carving textures and exploring their range of high-fire glazes. At Brick & Mortar, he leans into underglazes to create the bright colors and graphic surface patterns that have become a signature part of his work.

Across both studios, Alex is constantly testing and experimenting with materials, color, and function. That spirit of exploration keeps his work evolving and ensures that no two pieces ever feel quite the same.

Just as important to Alex as the making itself is the community around it. Being part of multiple studio spaces allows him to continually learn new techniques and ideas from fellow ceramicists, something he sees as an essential part of growing as an artist.

You can explore more of Alex’s work at alexbeckceramics.com and see what he’s currently making on Instagram @alexbeckceramics. And of course, stop by the studio to see his artist window in person, where the textures, colors, and surfaces truly come to life. The pieces in the window will be for sale; you’ll find a price list and more information as well.
